PEDESTRIAN DEATHS

Pedestrian deaths in Orange County in 1988 remained virtually unchanged from the year before. One-fifth of the deaths occurred in Santa Ana, by far the individual city leader. Several cities recorded no pedestrian deaths in 1988, but only tiny La Palma (less than two square miles and with a population of less than 20,000) has a clean record for the last five years.

Between Orange County and its four contiguous neighbors, almost 600 pedestrians were killed in 1988. The 57 deaths here ranked the county third, with 10% of such fatalities in the five-county area (and 6% of the entire state total).
