Israelis observing the Jewish New Year 5750 donned holiday garb and set out on foot for synagogues across the nation amid heavy security. But violence continued in the Israeli-occupied territories, where two Palestinians were reported killed and 12 wounded. Rosh Hashanah is one of Judaism’s holiest days, and many non-observant Jews also attend prayer services on the holiday, which began Friday at sundown and ends today at sundown. Meanwhile, Israel Radio reported that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had telephoned Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and that the two agreed to continue their dialogue on Mideast peace. Shamir later told Israel Army Radio that “the peace initiative is alive, fermenting, it is talked about and argued about.”
