Share

The first Soviet defense minister to visit the United States arrived in Washington for a six-day visit in which he will hold talks with U.S. leaders, tour American military bases and take in a Civil War site. Dmitri T. Yazov, 65, was greeted on his arrival at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., by Defense Undersecretary Paul G. Wolfowitz. Yazov was accompanied by his wife, Emma, and senior Soviet military leaders. Yazov’s schedule includes visits to Navy and Marine Corps installations in Southern California. Defense Secretary Dick Cheney issued the invitation to Yazov to reciprocate for the visit Cheney’s predecessor, Frank C. Carlucci, made to the Soviet Union in August, 1988.
