John Thomas Walker; Dean of Washington Cathedral
John Thomas Walker, 64, dean of the Washington National Cathedral and the city’s first black bishop. Walker was vice president of the national House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church. An ardent spokesman for racial conciliation, he supported the installation of women clergy members in the church. Walker joined the Episcopal Church in 1947 and went to Washington in 1966 to work in a program aimed at the city’s poorest neighborhoods. In Washington on Saturday of heart failure.
