NATION : Gang Sought in Assault on 2 Jews
Police searched today for a gang of men who attacked two Jewish college students hours before the start of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.
The gang shouted ethnic slurs and savagely beat the two young men. Police said they had made no arrests in what they termed a bias-related attack.
Up to 20 white men accosted the two 19-year-old youths early Sunday as they left a Brooklyn College fraternity party at Hillel House, the Jewish cultural organization.
Steven Weissberg, 19, suffered a ruptured spleen, which was later removed, and other internal injuries and was hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Joshua Fogel, 19, was hospitalized in stable condition with broken ribs and a skull fractured in three places. Doctors removed his spleen Sunday night during emergency surgery.
