Two university students who hijacked an airliner in Myanmar, formerly Burma, to demand democracy in their military-ruled nation will be tried in Thailand, where the plane landed, a senior Thai official said. Deputy Prime Minister Tienchai Sirisunpan told a Bangkok news conference that although the maximum penalty for hijacking is death, he expects the two students to receive lenient treatment. The students diverted a domestic flight with 83 aboard to a Thai air base and threatened to blow it up before freeing their hostages after nine hours of negotiations. Tienchai identified the students as Ye Tin, 21, and Ye Thi Ha, 25.
