Gas Pipeline Break Prompts Evacuation

Construction workers ruptured a natural gas pipeline in the 7500 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood Tuesday, forcing officials to shut down the busy street and briefly evacuate several buildings as a precaution. There was no explosion and no one was injured, city officials said.

The three-quarter-inch pipeline, buried five feet underground, was ruptured about 11:15 a.m. by a private construction crew. The crew, hired by Southern California Edison, was converting overhead power lines to underground, said Helen Goss, a city public information officer.

About 30 workers from four buildings near the leak were evacuated and pedestrians were kept out of the area, Goss said. The leak was sealed about noon.
