POLICE SHOOTINGS: Ten years ago, most police departments didn’t hire psychologists--but then shooting incidents were less common. (A1). These days, “every time you go out to a call, it’s life or death,” said Jack Jessen, president of the Peace Officers Assn. of Anaheim, one of many cities that counsels officers who shoot. “Ninety-nine percent of officers don’t have to unholster their gun in the course of work,” said Long Beach psychologist Gerald Fishkin, “but the 1% that do, go through hell.”
