From Times staff and wire reports

A long line of angry witnesses appeared before the San Francisco Police Commission and charged that police used excessive force during a violent confrontation in the city’s predominantly gay Castro District. Members of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP)--the group that organized last Friday’s march--accused the police of having deliberately provoked the violence after a march to protest the government’s policies on AIDS. More than 50 protesters who sat down in the middle of Castro Street were arrested.
