WORLD - South Africa Lifts Restrictions on Activist Albertina Sisulu
The government today lifted restrictions on the political activity of anti-apartheid activist Albertina Sisulu amid expectations her husband Walter, jailed for the past 26 years, will be released shortly.
Law and Order Ministry spokesman Lt. Peet Bothma said restrictions on Mrs. Sisulu, 71, imposed Feb. 24, 1988, were lifted at 7:40 a.m. today, allowing her to resume her political activity and lifting a virtual dusk-to-dawn house arrest order.
Mrs. Sisulu called the order “wonderful” and said a police officer informed her that her husband will be released over the weekend. President Frederik W. de Klerk Tuesday ordered the unconditional release of eight of the country’s most prominent security prisoners, including Sisulu.
