GTE Corp.: The Stamford, Conn., telecommunications company said third-quarter profit was up 18% to an all-time high. Earnings totaled $368 million on revenue of $4.4 billion, compared to $313 million on revenue of $4 billion in the same period last year. The company said the rise was due to increased use of its local telephone networks and strong growth in cellular telephone operations.
