WORLD IN BRIEF : WORLDWIDE : UNESCO Postpones Action on PLO Bid
A UNESCO general conference formally postponed consideration of a Palestine Liberation Organization request for membership for its self-proclaimed state of Palestine. The conference followed an Oct. 11 recommendation by its Executive Council that the PLO application be deferred two years until the next general conference in autumn, 1991. Israel protested the adoption of a compromise resolution that called on the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “to allow Palestine to participate as closely as possible” in the work of the agency.
