WASHINGTON — The State Department said today that the Bush Administration opposes a resolution being discussed by the Senate to proclaim a national day of remembrance for Armenians who died as a result of what Armenian activists describe as genocide in the Ottoman Empire early this century.
A statement said the Administration wants Congess to find a way of marking the sufferings of the Armenian people without offending Turkey, a key U.S. ally.
“The Administration opposes the resolution. . . . We hope Congress can respond to the concerns of the Armenian people in a manner that does not offend our vital ally and friend, the Republic of Turkey,” the statement said.
