Ex-Officer Seized in $1.6 Million British Food Poison Case

A former police detective was arrested Friday in a $1.6-million extortion attempt and baby food poisoning scare in Britain.

Five babies were hospitalized and about 300 incidents of food containers spiked with sharp glass and metal were reported after the British subsidiary of the U.S.-based H.J. Heinz Co. received a demand for the money earlier this year.

Heinz and other manufacturers took baby food jars off supermarket shelves. Baby food is now sold in Britain in either tins or glass jars.
