P.M. BRIEFING : Wendy’s Balks at Paying Reward
A mother who blew the whistle on her son after he killed three people while robbing a Wendy’s restaurant is still waiting for her reward--2 1/2 years after the crime.
The fast food chain and the local franchisee have refused to pay a $25,000 reward to Annie Bell Broadway because the companies say she received some of the money her son stole in May, 1987.
Broadway’s son, Bernell Hegwood, was arrested in Louisiana after his mother told police about his role in the crime. Although she was suffering from a hangover, he had confessed to her after returning home with a bag full of money. Even though the mother’s tip led to an arrest and conviction, the fast food chain and the company that owns the local restaurant have gone to court to avoid paying the reward.
Hegwood is on Death Row at the Florida State Prison in Starke.
