From Times staff and wire service reports

A minimum-security inmate who escaped Monday from the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho in Castaic was arrested less than an hour later after a passer-by saw him jogging in a uniform marked “L.A. County Jail,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said today.

Jose Jimenez, 20, walked away from the compound shortly after 2 p.m. Monday and was arrested jogging along the Old Road near Hasley Canyon Road about 3 p.m., Lt. Ed Chenal said. He was being held on suspicion of escape at the department’s Santa Clarita Valley station, Chenal said. Jimenez had been serving a 60-day sentence for burglary since Oct. 16, Sgt. Tom Spencer said.

After escaping, Jimenez had tied his green jail T-shirt around his waist and had rolled up his pants, apparently so the uniform wouldn’t be noticed, but the words “L.A. County Jail” were still visible on the shirt, Chenal said.
