Sockers Close to Deal for Comets’ Haramina

The Sockers are close to a deal that would make Damir Haramina--the fourth leading scorer in Kansas City Comets’ history--their 18th and final roster player.

According to Socker President Ron Cady, Haramina flew to San Diego Monday to take a physical examination. If he passes, the Sockers will likely offer the Comets a future draft choice to sign him.

“Our intention right now is looking at Haramina as an addition to this club and not as a trade,” Cady said. “Hopefully we’ll know (Tuesday) if there’s an opportunity to make Damir a member of this team.”

Haramina, a 27-year-old forward, has been the victim of injury in the past two seasons, resulting in two knee operations and a hernia operation. He played in just 13 games last season, scoring three goals and eight assists.

“The physical (examination),” Cady said, “is a real important aspect of it.”

Haramina, a six-year veteran from Yugoslavia, appeared on his way to becoming an MISL star two seasons ago when he scored 42 goals in 45 games. But during preseason this year, Haramina reported to camp 13 days late and was suspended without pay.

“There was a little whisper that they were unhappy with him,” Socker Coach Ron Newman said. “I think he’s a great bargain for us, if he passes the physical. Two years ago he was the scourge of the league.”
