Knight-Ridder Inc.: The publisher of the Miami Herald and 27 other daily newspapers said falling newsprint prices, cost controls and a lower effective tax rate helped boost the Miami-based firm’s third-quarter profit by 18% to $37.8 million. Revenue rose 8% to $541 million from a year ago.
