NATION IN BRIEF : RHODE ISLAND : Police Handling of Mobster Is Probed

Providence Mayor Joseph R. Paolino Jr. launched an internal police investigation into why confessed murderer and mob informant Peter Gilbert was allowed to carry guns and drugs and collect welfare payments while in custody as a protected witness. After Gilbert died of a heart attack in June, 1988, on his way to a sky-diving outing, cocaine was found in his bag and it was discovered that he had been paid $98,000, took unsupervised trips and charged purchases of liquor, ammunition and jewelry to the state.
