Gyohten Calls Reports ‘Speculation’: “It is sheer speculation,” said Toyoo Gyohten in response to reports that Japan is working to position him as a candidate to succeed Michel Camdessus of France whose appointment as managing director of the International Monetary Fund ends in 1992. “I have two years of purification to go,” said Gyohten, who added that he just retired as Japan’s vice minister of finance for international affairs. He made his comments to a reporter before a speech to the Japan America Society of Southern California.
