Compton Board Lets Schools Chief Out of Contract
In a special meeting last week, the Compton Unified School District board agreed to let Supt. Ted D. Kimbrough out of his contract so that he can become head of the Chicago public school system.
The 54-year-old Kimbrough has been selected by the Chicago school board to head the third-largest school district in the country. He is to assume his new job in January and will resign his Compton post the same month, although the exact date has not been set. Under his contract, which was good until June, 1991, Kimbrough was paid $97,500 a year. In Chicago, his annual salary will be $175,000.
In a statement released after its closed-door meeting with Kimbrough, the board said it would “miss his presence and effectiveness as a superb educational advocate” and that it was “deeply proud” of his administrative and educational innovations in Compton.
The board did not say how or when it will begin looking for a new superintendent, school district spokeswoman Naomi Rainey said.
