* Trying again: A 25-year-old travel book by newly named Spanish Nobel laureate Camilo Jose Cela will be reprinted by the University of Wisconsin. The translated version of “Journey to Alcarria” sold only 2,000 copies in its original publication.

* Earth first: Former astronaut Scott Carpenter said humans must consider “a mission to planet Earth” before heading to other solar systems. “The planet, our home, is in desperate need of intensive care,” he told an audience at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Carpenter said 30 million acres of tropical rain forests are being destroyed each year, 70 million acres of forest in the industrial north are damaged and holes in the ozone layer are getting larger.

* No more dozing: First Lady Barbara Bush has bucked a Reagan-era tradition by scheduling speakers before, rather than after, White House dinners. The Bushes say the approach makes a better flow for their guests. It also avoids embarrassing the orator with snores or early departures.

* Settled: West Virginia Gov. Gaston Caperton and his wife, Dee, were divorced after 23 years of marriage. The settlement included an agreement in which the former First Lady dropped a $12-million securities fraud suit against him. In her suit, the former Miss America runner-up claimed the governor and some of his associates persuaded her to sell stock for $2.98 million when it was worth far more.
