Santa Monica : Dispute Goes to Rent Panel

Share

The Santa Monica Rent Control Board is expected to make a final decision tonight on its controversial Incentive Housing Program, which would allow landlords to raise rents on some units by as much as $900 if an equal number of units are set aside for poor tenants for as low as $266 a month.

The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chamber, 1685 Main St.

The program, formerly called the Inclusionary Housing program, is the board’s attempt to stop landlords from evicting tenants and getting out of the rental business under state law.

The program is opposed by both landlords, who claim it does not allow rents to go high enough, and tenants, who say landlords are being given too much.

It is expected to be approved and would go into effect in about two weeks.
