WORLD IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Beirut Cease-Fire Broken by Shelling

Shells slammed into Christian and Muslim residential areas of Beirut in the first major breach of an Arab League-sponsored cease-fire that had calmed Lebanon since late September, security officials said. The shelling tapered off at dawn as Arab League envoy Lakhdar Ibrahimi headed for Beirut from Damascus to help arrange a meeting of Lebanon’s Parliament to choose a hew head of state.
