From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A hydrocarbon leak was discovered at the devastated Phillips Petroleum Co. plastics plant at Pasadena, Tex., leading to a halt in the search for 17 bodies still thought to be buried under tons of twisted steel. Nineteen Phillips employees and three contractor employees are believed to have died in the blast Monday, officials said. Only five of the bodies have been found. The leaking substance, isobutane, is a flammable liquid similar to butane. The cause of the accident has not been determined.
