Measure M’s Impact on County’s Traffic, Taxes

Share

I am disappointed that the Los Angeles Times endorsed Measure M, which would increase Orange County’s sales tax to fund widening of freeways and streets in the first 10 years of a 20-year transportation plan, and only in the second 10 years fund construction of rail services.

I would be happy to pay increased sales tax and increased gas tax if the funds were used to build rail service with bus feeder lines now instead of widening freeways and streets.

Ignoring short- and long-term economic and health costs, the 20-year transportation plan would spend the majority of the sales tax increase to create more room for more cars, resulting in more pollution and more loss of our beautiful, natural land.

It is a false hope to believe this will solve Orange County’s gridlock. More and bigger freeways do not mean traffic relief when massive tracts of homes are continuously developed.

Until I can vote for clean mass transportation now , not 20 years from now, I will vote no on Measure M and any similar measures.
