Paced by a decrease in sales to the United States, Japan’s exports of four-wheel vehicles for the first half of fiscal 1989 decreased 4.8% from the same period last year, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Assn. reported today.

Association spokesmen said sales to the United States for the April-September period fell 10.8%, largely because of slow demand and rising competition in the U.S. market.

The spokesmen also attributed the decrease to growing local production by Japanese auto makers.

The association said exports to the European Community gained 0.4%, while sales to Australia and New Zealand soared 54.9% and those to Southeast Asian countries grew 8.9%.
