Share

The Glendale Housing Authority voted unanimously Tuesday to apply to thS. Department of Housing and Urban Development for funding for 20 additional units for lower-income households.

The $156,000 grant would enable the city to increase its stock of Section 8 federally subsidized housing from 697 to 717 units, said Madalyn Blake, director of community development and housing.

Blake told City Council members meeting as the Housing Authority that Rep. Carlos J. Moorhead (R-Glendale) informed her of the availability of the money.

Under the Section 8 program, tenants pay 30% of their monthly incomes toward rent and HUD pays the remainder of the fair market rental to the landlord.

The council earmarked the $156,000 for six units for the elderly, 13 for small families and one for a large family.

Glendale has operated its Section 8 housing program since 1976.

A memo from Blake to City Manager David Ramsay said the Section 8 office has more than 5,000 applications for housing assistance.

To qualify for the program, gross annual income for a single-person household must not exceed $13,950, and the annual income for a family of four may not exceed $19,950.
