WORLD : Athens Pollution Fight Bans Cars
The government ordered emergency measures to combat heavy air pollution in Athens for the second time this week as hundreds of people went to hospitals today complaining of respiratory problems.
The measures, starting this evening and lasting for 24 hours, will ban all private cars from central Athens, close schools and cut industrial fuel consumption by 50%, the Environment Ministry said in a statement.
Hospital sources said at least 300 people, most of them elderly, were admitted with heart and respiratory problems.
