FCC OKs Transpacific Cable: Pacific Telecom Cable Inc. received final Federal Communications Commission approval to install the western end of the first digital fiber-optic cable that will stretch to Japan from the United States. Pacific Telecom Cable, a majority-owned subsidiary of Pacific Telecom Inc., had received a conditional FCC license in April, 1987. The cable project is a joint venture between Pacific Telecom Cable of the U.S., International Digital Communications Inc. of Japan and Cable and Wireless PLC of the United Kingdom. Pacific Telecom owns the U.S. portion of the project.
