Eugene C. Dorsey will retire at year’s end as Gannett Foundation president, chief executive officer and trustee, the foundation announced today.

Dorsey, 62, is taking an early retirement to devote more time to Independent Sector, a Washington, D.C.-based coalition of philanthropic organizations, the foundation said. He was named Independent Sector chairman last month.

The 54-year-old Gannett Foundation, one of the nation’s largest with year-end assets in 1988 of more than $500 million, will move its headquarters to Arlington, Va., on Dec. 1.
