STEPS TO PEACE
Here are some of the key elements of the peace plan approved Sunday by Lebanon’s P arliament :
Parliament: Increases number of seats in unicameral house to 108 from 99, equally divided between Muslims and Christians.
President: Strips some powers from office, traditionally held by a Christian, to give prime minister and Parliament Speaker, both Muslims, larger decision-making role.
Syria: Calls for eventual, partial Syrian military withdrawal from Muslim West Beirut. But sets no timetable for withdrawal of Syrian troops from Bekaa Valley--a persistent Christian demand.
