Raisa Will Attend Summit Off Malta if Gorbachev OKs It
Soviet First Lady Raisa Gorbachev said today that her husband will decide whether she accompanies him next month to the superpower summit off Malta.
Bundled in a black wool coat and a blue fur cap on a damp Moscow morning, she watched the annual parade celebrating the Nov. 7 anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution from a stand for special guests at Red Square.
Asked whether she planned to travel with Gorbachev for the Dec. 2-3 summit, the first lady responded: “If my husband takes me.”
She politely declined repeated requests for her assessment of the massive economic problems facing her husband.
“It’s a holiday,” she said. “Let’s just relax.”
