WORLD : Unofficial Chernobyl Toll: 250

From Times wire services

More than 250 people who worked at the Chernobyl power station or helped in the cleanup after the world’s worst nuclear accident have died since the April, 1986, disaster, a Soviet newspaper said today.

The weekly Moscow News put the death toll at more than 250 but gave no source for the figure.

Official accounts have said 31 people died after an explosion and fire swept the station, causing the evacuation of 100,000 people from the Ukraine and Byelorussia and sending a cloud of radioactive fallout across Europe.
