WORLD : Turkish Extremists Destroy Art
From Times Wire Services
ISTANBUL, Turkey —
Bearded Muslim militants smashed their way into an Istanbul art gallery today and ripped apart pictures of ballet dancers and other women, the Anatolian News Agency said.
The attack by Islamic fundamentalists occurred as Turkey commemorated the 51st anniversary of the death of its secularist founder, Kemal Ataturk.
Up to 60 men overpowered the watchman and forced their way into the central Istanbul gallery where they destroyed about 150 pictures, the agency said. They fled before police arrived.
