Bradley Praises Safety Rule for Day-Care Centers

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley praised a state board’s recommendation to rescind a rule that allowed child care centers to be placed on upper-level building floors.

Bradley, who is in Europe, issued a statement this week calling the action by the Board of Fire Services “a positive between quality child care and public safety.”

Bradley said he hoped that state Fire Marshal James McMullen would return to following the earlier standards of permitting day care centers to be located no higher than the second floor and requiring extensive disaster evacuation provisions for second-floor facilities.

In September, McMullen changed state policy to allow centers as a high as the seventh floor. The board voted on the policy Wednesday.
