WORLD IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : Bases Issue Discussed by Cheney, Aquino

Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said he discussed the issue of renewing the leases of U.S. bases with Philippine President Corazon Aquino during a 20-minute meeting in Washington. But, he said, she made no commitment pending next month’s official talks in Manila on the future of the bases--Clark Air Base, Subic Bay Naval Base and four smaller installations. Cheney said he did not discuss the issue of increased rent with Aquino or the possibility of shifting U.S. forces to Singapore.
