World IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Hezbollah Hails Deaths of Hundreds
The Iranian-backed group Hezbollah celebrated the slayings of hundreds of Americans, French and Israelis with a march through a Shiite suburb in southern Beirut. The march, on the seventh anniversary of a suicide truck bombing of Israel’s military headquarters in the southern port city of Tyre that killed at least 75 people, was witnessed by thousands of chanting Hezbollah supporters. Hezbollah, or the Party of God, is backed by Iran and now numbers an estimated 4,000 members. It claims responsibility for at least 10 suicide bombings, including that of the U.S. Marine compound in Beirut in October, 1983, that killed 241 American servicemen.
