The parents of a 36-year-old crewman who died when he was washed overboard in the Whitbread round-the-world yacht race have requested that he be buried at sea, race organizers said today.

Anthony Phillips, of Driffield, England, was pronounced dead after being pulled from the freezing waters of the south Atlantic by other crew members on the British entry, Creighton’s Naturally.

Organizers said Phillips’ parents also had asked that their son’s vessel continue in the race.

Phillips and Bart van den Dwey, a Belgian crew member, were swept overboard Sunday. Both were equipped with radio distress beacons that indicated their positions. The yacht located them after 30 minutes but the 35-year-old Van den Dwey, from Antwerp, was the only one alive.
