UCSD Men’s Soccer, Water Polo Advance

Chris Hanssen’s goal in overtime gave the UC San Diego men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over St. John’s College in St. Louis and advanced the Tritons to the NCAA Division III semifinals.

UCSD (14-5-3), the defending national champion, will play Elizabethtown (Penn.) in one semifinal at a site and date to be announced today. The Rochester Institute of Technology will meet Greensboro College in the other.

Craig Hyde scored off an assist from Hanssen for the Tritons’ other goal. St. John’s outshot UCSD, 8-5.

Elizabethtown defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0, on penalty kicks. RIT defeated Plymouth State, 2-0, and Greensboro defeated Mary Washington, 2-0.

WATER POLO

The UC San Diego water polo team earned its first berth in the NCAA championship tournament with a 6-5 victory over Air Force in the final of the Western Water Polo Assn. tournament at UCSD.

Jason Brown, the conference most valuable player, scored two goals to lead the Tritons, who won the tournament for the second consecutive year.

This is the first year that the tournament champion receives an automatic berth in the eight-team NCAA tournament, which will be played Nov. 24-26 at the University of Indiana. The Tritons are ranked No. 8 in the country.

FOOTBALL

After finishing its season 7-2, the University of San Diego football team was not selected to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Named from the West Region were St. Nobert, Wis., (8-2), Central Iowa (9-0), Simpson, Iowa, 8-2, and St. John’s, Minn., 8-0-1.

TENNIS

Ditta Huber, a 13-year-old from La Jolla, win her fifth women’s open tournament by defeating Monica Kocian, 6-0, 6-2, in the University City Racquet Club Tournament. Huber, ranked first in San Diego and fourth in Southern California in the women’s 18s, beat Renee Faulstich in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-2.

Chris Numbers of El Cajon beat Jim Ferrari, a teaching pro at University City Racquet Club, in the men’s open, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. Numbers, ranked No. 1 in San Diego in the boys’ 18s, defeated Doug Elly of San Diego in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-3.
