Vons Cuts 200 Workers: Vons Cos. supermarket chain said it dismissed 200 workers as a result of finishing most of the work on integrating its operations with the former Safeway grocery stores in Southern California. The dismissals involved operations, marketing and training personnel at Vons’ administrative offices in El Monte. Vons, which acquired the Southern California operations of Safeway in August, 1987, now employs 34,500 workers. Earlier this year, it dismissed 150 workers at the former Safeway regional headquarters in Downey.
