State OKs Small Malibu Sewer Opposed by County

In a setback for county officials, the California Coastal Commission on Tuesday approved a regional sewer plan for Malibu substantially smaller than what the county says is necessary for the seaside community.
By a 9-1 vote, the commission reduced by half the system’s capacity to service commercial users. Opponents of the county’s plans said the plan approved Tuesday represents a 25% to 40% reduction in the overall size of the system promoted by the county.
“It’s a great victory, and we’re extremely pleased,” said Sara Wan, a member of the Malibu Township Council, which, along with other groups, has long opposed the county’s sewer plans as a recipe for widespread development.
