SHORT TAKES : Cervantes Prize for Paraguayan
Paraguayan author Augusto Roa Bastos today won the Cervantes Prize, popularly known as the Nobel for literature in the Spanish language.
The 72-year-old author is best known for his 1974 historical novel “I, The Chief,” about the 19th Century Paraguayan dictator Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia.
The prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture for the work of a lifetime, carries a $86,200 prize. It is named after 16th Century Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of “Don Quixote” and considered by many to be the father of the novel.
