NAMES IN THE NEWS : Luci Johnson Opens ‘Think Tank’
Luci Baines Johnson dedicated a new nursing research center about 25 years after her father signed the first law that recognized the shortage of qualified nurses in the country. She had led a campaign to raise $4.6 million for the International Center for Nursing Scholarship and Nursing Library, which will function as a “think tank” for health care issues. The Nurse Training Act, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, addressed the shortage of nurses in the country, which is caused by low salaries, high stress and low morale, Johnson said at Wednesday’s dedication. “Some of the problems that you’re hearing about in nursing now are not new on the horizon,” she said.
