Former East German swimming star Kornelia Ender, who won four gold and four silver medals at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, has applied to emigrate, the official news agency ADN reported today.

Her husband, Steffen Grummt, who won a gold medal with East Germany’s four-man bobsled team in 1985, also applied to leave East Germany.

ADN said the couple listed personal reasons in their application. The agency did not say if the two planned to resettle in West Germany or in another country.

Ender, who has worked as a physical therapist, broke world records and won titles at major international competitions in the 1970s.

No other major East German sports stars are known to have emigrated in the massive exodus that has brought more than 200,000 East Germans to West Germany in recent months.
