Will on Campus Censorship

Aside from the issue of censorship itself, readers of this article may have felt inflamed on other grounds. Importantly, responsible journalism requires that respect for individual thought as well as opinion is presumed. It seems once again that Will’s article was designed to characterize readers into two seemingly mindless groups, the naive “liberal” and the misunderstood “conservative.”

Individuals don’t think in these rigid contexts, but rather people are subject to individual opinion based upon their own criteria. Euphemisms such as “exclaimed some liberals,” and “liberals have been First Amendment fanatics,” require identification of the offending parties specifically. Perhaps a simple warning label might read: Whenever “those guys” or “those so and so” inferences are suspected, we might ask who are they?
