WORLD : Greek Political Stalemate Ends
Political leaders agreed today on a short-term government of the country’s widely divided major parties, ending a stalemate produced by inconclusive elections this month.
“The three parties agreed to support a government whose life-term will last until mid-April,” conservative leader Constantine Mitsotakis told a news conference.
The decision to hold general elections in April follows four rounds of talks between President Christos Sartzetakis and conservative, socialist and communist leaders. Mitsotakis said the interim administration will be headed by a respected former Bank of Greece governor, Xenophon Zolotas, who is not a member of Parliament.
