The Padres added five names to their 1989-90 winter roster Tuesday, but two pitchers the team is pursuing--Mark Davis and Mark Langston--were not among them. The club also announced that second baseman Roberto Alomar will undergo surgery next week for ligament damage to the middle finger of his left hand, but will be ready for spring training.

The five minor leaguers added to the Padre roster, bringing the total to 37 players, are pitchers Jeremy Hernandez, Omar Olivares, Darrin Reichle and Rafael Valdez and first baseman Kevin Garner.

Hernandez, acquired in April from the St. Louis organization in exchange for outfielder Randall Byers, pitched for three of the Padres’ minor league clubs in 1989. Hernandez, 23, was 3-5 at Charleston (A), 5-2 at Riverside (A) and 2-1 at Wichita (double-A). His best work came at Riverside, where he had a 1.75 earned-run average and four complete games in nine appearances.

Olivares, 22, was 12-11 as a starter at Wichita. Reichle, 23, is best known for throwing two no-hitters in 1988 while at Charleston. He was 10-10 with a 4.15 ERA in 26 starts at Riverside. Valdez, 21, was 10-5 in 21 starts at Riverside before finishing the year in Wichita, where he was 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA.

Garner, 24, batted .249 with 19 home runs and 63 runs batted in during 103 games at Wichita.

Davis and outfielder Carmelo Martinez, who also filed for free agency, are not listed on the Padre roster. Davis, the National League Cy Young Award winner, finished sixth in the N.L. Most Valuable Player voting announced Tuesday with 76 points.

The roster includes 18 pitchers, three catchers, 10 infielders and six outfielders.
