The United Nations’ refugee agency Friday called on Hong Kong to investigate allegations that undue force was used when moving Vietnamese boat people between detention centers.

The office of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has protested the circumstances surrounding the Oct. 31 move of 48 Vietnamese, who are among the tens of thousands of boat people seeking asylum in the British colony.

Some of the Vietnamese reportedly claimed that security forces used martial-arts techniques to immobilize them during the move from a detention center to Phoenix House, a holding center for Vietnamese who may be forcibly returned to their Communist homeland.

The government denied that undue force was used.
