An intruder who claimed to be Prince Andrew used a ladder to breach a wall surrounding Buckingham Palace, Scotland Yard said today.

A man who gave his name as “Andrew Windsor,” the dynastic name of Prince Andrew, was arraigned in magistrate court on charges of theft of a ladder, a police spokeswoman said.

He was released on bail until a hearing Dec. 11.

The intruder gave his address as Windsor Castle and his age as 37. Police were investigating his true identity.

The man used a ladder to climb over a wall around the palace at 4:15 a.m. Saturday, police said. “He was apprehended as soon as he breached the security system,” the spokeswoman said.

“There was no question of him doing a Michael Fagan,” a police spokesman said. Fagan’s intrusion into the queen’s bedroom in July, 1982, led to a complete overhaul of royal security.
